Architecture meets structural design

ArchiCAD, seamlessly integrated with Tekla Structures, carries the benefits of the Virtual Building and the 3D workspace into structural design and fabrication, all the way to the cutting machine

Budapest, January 26, 2006 - Graphisoft (www.graphisoft.com) announced today that its award-winning 3D building design solution ArchiCAD, can now seamlessly link to a leading structural design solution Tekla Structures. This import-export link means that design elements can be carried directly into Tekla for structural design tasks such as analysis and detailing, and returned to ArchiCAD retaining their critical parameters.  

To give our customers dramatic process improvement, we are better integrating the workflow between architecture, structural design and fabrication, says Bence Kovacs, Vice President of ArchiCAD Product Management from Graphisoft. This unique ArchiCAD capability means that the same Virtual Building model can be used from the earliest sketches through to the CNC machine for production of building elements, using the appropriate software solution for every phase.

Teklas leading position in structural design market enables the integration of the most sophisticated and detailed structural information into the Virtual Building model, says Risto Räty, Executive Vice President and head of Building & Construction business area of Tekla. This integration and round-trip exchange of data will enable both disciplines to minimize human errors and to save time by avoiding double-modeling the building.

Because the intelligent building structural elements, such as parametric steel profiled beams, are interpreted the same way in both applications, these structures can be edited and detailed in Tekla Structures. All these changes and details will be automatically updated when imported back into ArchiCAD.

Using the same 3D Virtual Building model for architectural and structural design, means companies using ArchiCAD 9 can now exchange data in an intelligent way with companies using Tekla Structures 11.2, and vice versa. This opens new doors for cost savings and structural optimization and performance - and feedback on the buildings structural design can be obtained at any time during the design process. Ongoing changes to the design need not result in laborious (and often duplicated) reworking in both separate applications - manually adjusting the geometry of the building to keep up with the alterations - because the essence of a 3D model means that all data is up-to-date and immediately usable.
